Problem one: A monster like that is bound to have a good nose. Smoke from a fire would surely be noticeable, so I doubt they’d be suffocated by carbon monoxide from the smoke.
Problem two: That plan would require filling up the whole cave with smoke. That means sealing up anywhere the smoke can leak out of, including the entrance, and I doubt they can do that without getting caught.
They should just fill the cave with carbon monoxide using his fire logs. The orcs will go to bed and wake up dead. They’ll never know what killed them.
